Before going over the auction results, let’s peek inside an onsite auction and discuss some market trends we are seeing in ag equipment sales.
On June 28, AgriVision Equipment in Pacific Junction, Iowa, partnered with Rice Auction Company to conduct a simulcast (i.e., with both onsite and online bidders) inventory reduction auction. A few Tractor Zoom team members attended to witness an onsite auction, which has become less common in the past few years, and ask questions to dealers, auctioneers, and attendees.
According to Matt Raasch, Used Equipment Manager at AgriVision Equipment, their auction results exceeded even some of the more optimistic projections. He credited part of this success to buyers being able to view and touch the equipment firsthand, resulting in greater enthusiasm and higher final sales prices despite continued oversupply issues. In fact, one piece fetched the highest auction sale price recorded in June for a utility tractor (see below for details).
The ag equipment market continues to experience a downward shift in prices due to an oversupply of high-use equipment, creating a buyer’s market. However, all segments for ag equipment sales numbers were down compared to the same time last year. Both auctions and dealerships reported increased inventory levels, particularly for row crop tractors and combines, leading to increasingly competitive pricing.
Total tractor sales for June are down roughly 16% from 2023, while self-propelled combine sales are down 31%. These lower numbers follow a May that also showed a significant slowdown in sales.
Looking ahead, the equipment market is expected to remain challenging, as inventory levels and economic uncertainties will likely keep prices low into the next quarter. Overall, the short-term outlook into 2025 points to continued pressure on equipment prices, with potential for stabilization as inventory levels balance out and economic conditions improve.
